fascinating and horrible ideas for fantasy TTRPGs

Critical Hits

Melee

  • Divine hammer

Your strike is so mighty that a divine radiant light comes down and hits your target for an additional 2d8 damage. If this was from your god, you’ve done well. If not, you might want to get religion.

Ranged

  • Right in the kisser

You hit your target right in the face between the mouth and nose if they’ve got ’em. For the next 1d4 rounds, that target has disadvantage on attack rolls and can’t take attacks of opportunity.

Magic

  • What animal are you thinking of?

Your target transforms into the first animal you think of. Depending on their alignment and disposition, they may hop away or fight you.

Critical Misses

Melee

  • Every rose has its thorn

Your miss causes you to brush against a small thorny plant you didn’t notice. Make a DC 12 CON save or become poisoned for 1d4 rounds.

Ranged

  • Flat-footed

Your miss stuns you so badly that you lose your reactions for this round and the next.

Magic

  • Paper cut

You create (or just now notice) a tiny sliver in between two of your fingers. You take 1 HP of damage and have disadvantage on all Concentration and Sleight of Hand checks for the next 1d4 rounds.
